MARCH 7, 1989 Three 'Dogs to Indy, rest to Rocklin By Jennifer Konze Sports Editor While the rest of the team travels north to the oulcr limits of suburban Sacramento. Fresno Sale's three lone qualifiers will fly east for the weekend lo the NCAA Indoor Championships in Indianapolis, Indians. Seniors Billy Coleman and Ken Putnam and sophomore Reggie Jackson qualified earlier this season lo make Ihe trek. Putnam was the first Bulldog lo qualify for the ehampionships. At the Cal Slate Los Angeles Weight Pentaihalon in December, he quialificd in the 35-pound weight by tossing the weight 61-8 1/4. bettering the qualifing mark by over a foot A Fresno native, the Fresno City College transfer follows in the footsteps of other FCC transfers who have made their marks at FSU—Daron Crass and Machah Littleton. Coleman and Jackson both qualified at Texas Tech. Jan. 14. A Taft JC transfer, Coleman qualified for the long jump wiih a 25-10 3/4 effort. The NCAA indoor qualiflying mark is 25-4. His personal best at Taft JC was 25-11. As a senior in high school. Coleman competed in his first and last year of track and won all-state, all-region and.aJl- districi honors as a long jumper. The trip will be Coleman's second in as many years. Also making a second consecutive trip is Jackson. ■. Jackson qualified for the triple jump with a 52-11 mark. The NCAA indoor qualifying mark is 52-3 3/4. His effort tied him for third in career leaders with Jame Williams' mark in 1986 and was a personal record, bettering his qualifying mark from last year, 52-9 1/2 Oiginally from San Francisco, Jackson place third in the state in the triple jump as a senior in high school In last years' PCAA Championships, Jackson placed first in the triple jump and finished second to Coleman in the long jump. Senior Ernie Freer look the 1500 (3:51.53) and placed third in the 800 (1:5337). Fleer's cross country teammate Jason Lienau place first in his ever steeplechase. Women swimmers finish seventh By Jennifer Konze Sports Editor In the Big West Swimming and Diving Championships held last weekend, the Fresno Stale women's team finished seventh in a field of eight "Realistically, we expected to finish seventh." said Terri McKcever. Fresno Slate women's swim coach. She also said that they closed the gap on some of the other schools. . However. FSU saw. five school records fall, 25 individual bests and eight season bests in lhe championships. Adding io ihe outing was that 60 percent of the swims were lifetime bests. "Our main goal was io swim as many lifetime and season bests as possible," said McKcever. "Wc did that in a kx of cases." Fresno Slate's relay learn broke three school records over ihe weekend. The 200-yard medley relay leam ot Liz LaBonie, Paige Campbell. Nancy Clarke and Erin Paul! broke ihe school record with a 1:52.35 performance. Another relay also broke a school record The combination of Angel Tristan, LaBonte, Campbell and Paul! recorded a 7:53.76 time in lhe 800-yard relay. The 400-yard medley relay consisting of LaBonte. Erin Gustafson, Clarke and Trisian clocked in at 4:0753—breaking the third relay record. Highlighting the Bulldogs by making it into the .finals were Liz LaBonte and Angel Tristan. LaBonic finished last in the 200-yard backstroke with a lime of 2:13.74. The winning umc was by UCSB's Lori Blain (2:05.90). ' None of lhe 200-yard backstroke competitors qualified for the NCAA finals , On lhe season, the Bulldogs finished with an 114 record, improving upon their 3-8 mark last year. "As a whole, we're very pleased with } the season," said McKcever. • McKcever said that in order to bring up their own personal levels thet need to swim against better schools. The squad will lose only two seniors—Paige Campbell and Kris Norgaari Campbell leaves her mark in several all- time top five freestyle events including the 50-yard (second. 24.60. 1988). 100- yard (third. 53.45. 1988). 200-yard (third. 1:58.17. 1988) and the 500-yard (fourth. 5:24.32.1988). The Salinas native was a pan of the team that broke the school record in ihe SOfJ-yard freestyle (Cambcll, Clarke, Gustafson and Paul!; 8:04.70). Norgaard had a personal record in the 50-yard freestyle at lhe championships with time of 26.29. While the leam is losing these two seniors, there is a strong base and middle ground of swimmers already making contributions. Of the eight freshmen on this year's squad. Liz LaBonte and Angel Trisian were standouts. McKcever said that lhe goal in building ihe squad is to recruit a strong freshmen class.
