"Every Time I Climb a Tree," by David McCord, was the poem submitted by the 24" first-graders from Kerman's Sun Empire Elementary School. "The children found it themselves in their book and decided that they wanted to do n," said their teacher. They studied one- and-a-half months for iheir appearance. Terry Pacini, whose son Matthew was one of the performers, was delighted with the behavior of the whole class. "I am happy with what I saw. And we haven't lost one child in this [crowd]," she said jokingly. That's another achievement." Bret Harrison, speech communications major and one of the volunteers at the Peach Blossom Festival, has some nos¬ talgic memories about the event. "I participated in it [from 1974-76] with poems from Dr. Seuss. The title of one of them was The Scary Green Pants Wiih No One Inside Them' and I got an 'excellent' every year," the 25-year-old student said. .. "Last year I met my sixth-grade teacher here and she probably wondered why I wasn't in jail by now," he continued. "I just had a blast," said Dawn Kut- zorik, a speech communications major entary schools showed what they had learned over the last weeks at home'and in school. Jennifer Taylor, from North Fork Union Elementary School, recited a poem about "A Cajun Night Before Christmas," and earned several hearty laughs for ha funny selection and her well-trained broad southern accent. Nine-year-old Amy Nazaroiff, from Roosevelt Elementary School in Fresno, told the poem of "Miss Norma Pugh", which gave the audience an impression how a first-grader may view his teacher. Stefanic Gravano, from the fourth grade of Roosevelt Elementary, astonished the teachers and parents with her selected poem. Dressed in a neat white dress, her hair braided to a pony tail, she recited The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. "My teacher told mc to do something spooky and scary," she sail Every participant in the festival gets a certificate that states his or her perform¬ ance in the Festival from "superior" to "fair." Dr. Connie Bacon, of the CSUF speech department, said, "I am amazed how calm these children are during their performance. I teach public speaking and still get nervous when I have to give a speech."
