In one of the booths that line the
free speech area hangs a sign that
reads. "Eckankar - The New Age
Teaching of Soul Travel," If you've
ever wondered what that might mean,
you're not alone.
Eckankar (pronounced ek-ken-
kar) technically means "co-worker
with god" - and It strives to teach
individuals to develop their
relationship with the "supreme
being." said Ken Ernrner. the leader of
the campus Eckankar chapter.
If the name sounds foreign, there's
a reason. Eckankar finds Its roots in
Indian and Tlbettan histories, but
was primarily handed down through
oral tradition, he said.
Having many similarities to other
religions. such as Hinduism.
Eckankar employs words of
emotional meaning that don't have
effective translations In the English
language. "Mahanta" (the living Eck
Master), "Sugmad" (the sacred name
for God) and "vairagr (detachment)
are examples of such words.
