N The Daily Collegian V Friday, September 1, 1989 Page 3 ©liews c 1 ■ ■' PIMMSHBHff Enrollment diversifying at writing lab By Suzanne M. Colby StaffWriier With an advertising blitz targeting CSUF students from all disciplines, the English Department Writing Lab enrolled more than 450 students during the first week of instruction. Craig Bernthal. director of the writing lab. said attempts were made to publicize lab services to "every faculty member on campus." Bernthal said specific efforts were made to publicize tutoring services to a broader group of students. "We definitely want it to be more interdisciplinary," Bernthal said of the lab. Though lab enrollment traditionally consists of English A and English 1 students, the number of "own-benefit" students has increased in the pastfewyears. Bernthal said because the lab expects increased enrollment of students from disciplines other than English, especially^, those studying business, special efforts to accomodate them are planned. "We will do more to train the tutors to help students who are working on technical and scientific writing," said Bernthal. Bernthal said specific efforts to hire tutors from other disciplines were made last spring to meet the differing needs df students registering for the lab course. "It Is something we'll continue to do." Currently, the writing lab has 33 tutors on staff though that number may increase to meet the rise in lab enrollment Bergman said half of the writing lab tutors are "upper-division and half are masters or credential students." , Some tutors are students who teach English courses at CSUF. Though not a student, Bernthal, a professor of English, also tutors at the writing lab. "I don't think that I can talk to the tutors intelligently about how to help their students unless I'm in tht Tab, tutoring, and confronting the same challenges as the other people who work here," said Bernthal. Bernthal also said the lab could help' students who write at a more complex level deal with more complex wri ting problems. 'They can work on variety, vividness and persuasiveness," he said. JU1 Bergman, assistant director of .the writing lab, said many students were not aware of the tutorial services offered through the lab. "People need to know that this is a facility that is available to. them." Bergman said, emphasizing that the lab course was not designed exclusively for those with weak writing ski! Is. "Anybody who writes can benefit from having a reader," said Bergman, adding that writing lab tutors were adaptable to differing student needs. Unlike other tutorial services available on-campus", the wriUng lab services are provided through a lab course1. Students enrolling in the lab receive one unit of credit for completion of the class. Typically, groups of three students work with an assigned tutor for the entire semester. During the twice-weekly tutoring session, students normally work on writing assignments from other classes. % «' "I believe the best learning text is their own writing," said Bergman. Bergman said the writing lab does not offer "drop-in" tutoring because the lab is designed to help students sharpen their over-all writing skills. "We want students fqr at least one semester," Bernthal said, echoing Bergman's view. "We feel we need that much time to help them significantly improve their ability to write." Bernthal said strong writing skills play an important role in the workplace where "people compete with other people to have there views heard." "Writing Is going to be so Important to [students] when they get out of the university," Bernthal said.
