■V Page A Thursday, October 26, 1989 The Daily Collegian Opinion® More on gays, morals and SDI Trash' music in ears of beholder DearEdltor. in response to the Oct 19 letter concerning the "trash" music in the Pit, I would like to say to Mr. Marsella that when I read his PMRC- advocatlng dung heap of a letter. 1 wanted to wring his ignorant little wimp neck. NOT because the music incited any violent tendencies within myself, but because his letter sounded like something Tipper Gore would write. I deplore what that woman stands for. If little Marky can't integrate a bit of healthy, non-violent, uproariously entertaining deviance into his pathetic, sheltered life, then maybe it's time he joined a freakin' monastery (you wussie) and hung out with the monks for a few decades. Then, maybe when you come back (you quivering wanker) you'll realize that self-expression, no matter how ugly one may perceive it to be, is as important to our free society as the ethical boundaries that you so single- mindedly uphold. Sin Celery. Martin Reese P.S. Gherkin Raucous was the best band I have ever seen In the Pit Those who were brave enough to see the whole show know exactly what I mean. Dear Editor. When I turned in my first letter (on SDI. gay rights, and screwed-up priorities). I knew there would be a few refutations, but I'm sorry thus far the ones IVe seen have displayed the pathetic brain-lock I'm talking about. Morals aren't the case in point I'm trying to drive home. I don't give a damn personally if people engage in S&M or bestiality (which I see as being Just as deviant as homosexuality) in their own homes. That's their right, which 1 fully respect even though I don't agree with it. My personal opinion, however, that I think others might share, is that's where it should dammlt-ass stay, behind closed doors!! Free sex (which I'm not equating with the previously men- Uoned) which I don't practice either. I can deal with very easily among the few friends I have who practice it. But must we advertise and flaunt everything as openly as we are? Who or what are we trying to challenge so defiantly and belligerently? Why are w-rmore concerned with a deviant's right to parade their warped behavior when, this very second, a nuclear warhead has the potential to vaporize the skin right off their skeleton? Also, one can be very patriotic and oppose these perverse orientations. As for further decay, the two things I'm 'discussing are HARDLY the only two that could be mentioned. As for Aslmov. Sagan and SDI, I acknowledge from what little I know about them, that they are two intelligent theoreticians: unfortun atelv I suggest Mr. Newtyn find some people who have taken that extra step into that realm of hope, life and practicality as Dr. Teller has, rather than accepting the' necrotic, futile concept of inaction and death. As for Mr. Newlyn calling SDI insanity? Let's compare the two choices we have. The first of which is MAD, the currenl "sane" alternative that many ignorant people choose to accept. Including many who are holding high political offices, which says that "we'll kill as many of yours as you try to of ours:" somewhat primal tn nature I'd say. In comparison, the only things SDI really threatens to an unannounced missile launched with hostile intent, instead of threatening millions of lives (which consequently ours would threaten very few as Russia has been deploying a ballistic missile defense for some time - kind of funny when they're doing all they can to keep us from deploying one). The boost and midcourse phases of ballistic missiles are ideal times at which they can be taken out before they are a threat to anybody. Let the people be the judge." now that they have a few more of the facts, which is a more sensible choice. Come on facts — let's reassess our priorities. i Paul Kunkel Extremes on both sides of race issue Need campaign for new editor \ To the Editor. Your recent column in Monday's Collegian, lambasting CSUF students for their lack of compassion for the bay area earthquake, smacked of severe self-i n volvemen t. Since your first column was the only advertisement (I checked) of the Collegian Donation Center," Mondays column seemed more like you were chastising students for not reading the flrst column rather than not helping victims. How do you know students weren't in the bay area helping, donating to the Red Cross or volunteering time and money to one of the countless relief efforts throughout the country (who bothered to advertise adequately)? It seems that Instead of trying to show concern and making an honest effort to aid the relief effort, you are engaging in a masturbatory campaign advocating Mike Green and his righteous attitude. Start a campaign for a new editor If you want to do some good. Concerned by your ignorance. Ka thy Marque-/ DearEdltor. Thank you. Rick Horowitz, for showing me how my letter was perceived, mainly as racist This was, however, not my intention in writing this letter. I do. as stated In my previous letter, understand that such an issue as racism exists, but my purpose was in pointing out the radical extremes of both sides of the issue: I do in no way condone racism; in fact, I find it a typical display of Ignorance and an Irrational form of hatred of what to foreign or "different" No race.should have the right to subjugate another on such superficial differences, such as color or cultural upbringing. I tried, however, to show how a radical faction seems either to gain sympathy from, or, on the other hand. irritate the indifferent majority. This depends mostly on how their protest comes across to the majority, in other words, the techniques of protest employed. Why can't we utilize the technique of educating on the attributes that all humans share, Instead of rallying over trivial issues such as the color of one's skin? I have always heard that America was the so-called "melting pot" of alien cultures. How can. however, the great "American alloy" be achieved when every Ingredient holds out to be its own specific element? 1 hope that clarifies my view for you. Rick. Chris Glass Vandals should read the Bible Clarifications on Chicano conference To the Editor. I am wriUng this letter to several points stated in a letter written last Thursday (Oct. 19) by Steven Seewald. First, the organization to which Mr. Seewald referred to isn't the Chicano Youth Festival- it is called tie Chicano Youth Conference. But. Mr. Seewald, you knew that because you were unbiased and on top Of the issues at last semester's ASI meetings. Secondly. Mr. Seewald. if you had your eyes and ears open last semester. you would have seen and heard some ASI members lie, cheat misrepresent students, exclude certain students and groups from meetings, and use parliamentary procedures to their advantage. Most importantly, these same students attempted to under- handedly make constitutional bylaw changes that would take away all powers from two newly elected Walt Kelley's POOD 'Chlcanas and consolidate those powers under one white male. But, that isn't RACISM - Is It?! Thirdly. Mr. Seewald. you are aware of ASI fiscal policy 7.3. This section allows for food line items to be funded "by the ASI for student re¬ cruitment functions. Lastly. Mr. Seewald. the Chicano Youth Conference is a student recruitment function. It I brings prospective .students to Fresno State University. Those students who do decide to attend Fresno State University will pay tuition, purchase books, buy food from food services and other items here on 'campus. These monies directly or indirectly come back to the entire student body, faculty and administration. Therefore,. CYC Is a cost-efficient student event \ Matthew Polanco By Doyle & Sterneckey DearEdltor. Who's sick anyways? Persons who damage personal property to make a point that the inhabitants of the dwelling are perverse and damned or the peaceful inhabitants whose only desire is to offer friendship to others? I can only assume it is your God which you think has given you permission to destroy this sanctum of friendship. My God teaches love Is truth and he had a book written to tell me and you so. It's called the Bible, perhaps you should read it. Oh - while you're reading - why not spend time wilh your textbooks broadening your educational horizons past junior high school "• level. Which is where you mustve learned childhood tactics as spray paint usage and how to Up over small structures. Not unlike children's toy blocks. I gave those up many years ago for greater structures such as human kindness and dignity. Both structures require a great deal of constructive energy to maintain. In college, we leam the pen is mightier. Might I suggest you lend yourselves to 'written tactics (not written on personal property) rather than pseudo- military ones.
