The Daily Collegian Tuesday, August 29, 1989 Page 7 Local theaters provide entertainment galore By Anastasia Hendrix Staff Writer Summertime may be over, but Just because the semester is underway doesn't mean you won't still be search- \ ing for fun and exciting ways to spend your evenings or weekends. Aside from the standard routine of dinner and movies. Fresno's theatrical community Is offering a refreshing al¬ ternative. These acUvltles can prove to be economical as well. Theatre at the U. the Experimental Theatre Company (ETC), Good Com¬ pany Players (GCP). Actors Repertory Theatre (ART). Fresno City College (FCC), and Theatre 3 have announced thelr upcomlng seasons, with a little bit of something for everyone. The theatrical alphabet soup In and around Fresno is Indeed varied, and although some of the titles may be less familiar than others, nearly all of them .-have the potential to prove very Inter¬ esting. At the very least, an evening out at the theater will giveyou the chance to try something different. Whether you're a theater fanatic, ora first-time candidate, making the switch to live entertainment might make the difference between a thought-provok¬ ing evening and another ntgh t at home with T.V. re-runs. So sample the list¬ ings below and see for yourseirif some¬ thing doesn't strike your fancy. Right here on campus, the comedy Ten Times Table opens the season Oc¬ tober 6th In the Arena Theater. The play takes place In a hotel ball¬ room as a group of motley characters try to organize a festival In tribute of the town's history. Thr. committee-like set- t ing has endless possibilities for comic display, with everything from the clash¬ ing of rival personaliUes to thenlt-pick- ing that seems to go hand in hand with these kind of meetings. Other plays being presented are ■ Harold Pinter's drama Betrayal, and_ Brecht's classic The Private Life of the Master Race. Betrayal, one of Pinter's more recent works, Is a study of infidelity told in reverse chronology. His plays are often Intricate and demand concentration from the audience but their elusive, elliptical style lends Itself to endless Interpretation. The Prtaate Life of the Master Race deals with Adolph Hitler and analyzes the effects of totalitarian rule. It's a_ classic and definitely worth seeing. } The spring semester offers Shakespeare's The Tempest. The Port¬ able Dance Troupe and another comedy - Independence , by Lee Blessing. The ETC doesn't announce its season unUl mid-semester but has consistently produced creative and worthwhile pro¬ ductions. These shows can be seen in the Lab School Theater (Room 101) and usually cost around $2.00. And in case you missed the produc¬ tions of As You like It and Romeo and Juliet by the Courtyard Shakespeare . Festival during the summer, be sure not to miss the their interpretation of The Winter's Tale towards the end of the semester. (Dates to be announced later.)
