Bulldog Sports f California State University, Fresno Thursday, Augusf31,1989 True callings must not be ignored Eric Burney It's once again that time of year. Wf inevitable, I suppose. These tangos with familiarity tend to take place with the passage of time. The familiarity I'm referring to is school, herds of people everywhere, this Kwky yet beautiful weather, general hysteria...football, football, more football... But what's football got to do with the scenario IVe created? Huh?? .. OrUy^yerything, at least to millions of die-hards like myself who find themselves craving some grid action no* sooner than four days after the multitudes of bowl games (playoffs and Super Bowl included) which invade our living rooms in December and January. j Life is difficult enough, only to become more nightmarish in the eight months ahead. Basketball is great. So is baseball, though the season's much too long. The summer drags lethargically. No one needs that much relaxation. This is why we begin to squirm in August. The first giant thrust into a new season begins with the pre-pre-season hype in the form of college and professional football "yearbooks." They're a bit expensive, but necessary, and they contain more raw info than anyone will ever be able to digest. • We really dig stats and stories — It makes us feel like experts. Long about mid-August, televised pre-season games hit the airwaves and we're in hog heaven. It doesn't matter that you'll -never see 70 percent of these players once the regular season begins and that you'll forget the final scores immediately; it's still football. A void has been filled for the time being. Happiness prevails. The high begins to wane ever so slightly right about now. but it's still there. Our heads have been captured by such trivial matters as class, jobs and various other activities. This is unfortunate...but not hopeless.
