The Hornets were drowned 82-13 and 77-17. respectively, by the FSU women and men. The previous day. the Bulldog women swimmers had opened their season against California at a meet in Stockton. California came out on top 93- 29 against the Bulldogs. Against Sacramento State, several Bulldogs swam lifetime bests. For the women. Tammie Furman swam lifetime bests of 2:16.73 in the 200- yard individual medley (backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle) and 5:23^41 in the 500- yard freestyle. Angel Tristan swam a personal best of 5:18.01 in the 500-yard freestyle. Head coach Tert McKeever added that Sonya Sultan also swam lifetime marks of 1:12.92 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 11:45.19 in the 1,000- yard freestyle. ■"flara (Meeler) had another great meet," McKeever said. Meeler placed flrst tn the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.57 and swam 'on the first-place 200- yard freestyle relay with Amy Downs. Christine Sweetland and Rhonda Deniston. The women swept every event except the 1,000- yard freestyle against the Hornets. Stephanie Clazie was the only winner for Sacramento. The men also did well against the Hornets. "Jim Hodge had a good, solid meet." McKeever said. Hodge swam to first places in the 500- and 1.000- yaid freestyle events. He also swam on the first- place 200-yard freestyle relay with Andy Propes, Kevin Hatch and Steve Emerzian. Hatch also had a good meet, placing flrst in the 100-yard butterfly and finishing second behind Hodge in the 500-yard freestyle. Senior Tom Overstreet won both the 200-yard freestyle and individual medley. He missed winning the 100-yard breaststroke when he was disqualified after recording a best Ume of 1:04.14. Ed Mayer moved to first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.75 after Overstreet was disqualified. Senior Andy Propes was one second off FSU record time in the 50-yard freestyle when he swam a time of 21.78. The record was set in 1976 by All- American Art Ruble. Despite losing. McKeever felt the meet against California went well. She said there were a number of good swims. Meeler swam lifetime bests of 5:23.4 and 11:01.6 in the 500-and 1.000-yard freestyle. YesI I did an informal unscientific survey of three professors and three students - all of whom's primary language Is English - to determine lf they could spot the grammatically incorrect error of 'nor' instead of 'or' In Coach Holtz' apology letter. To my surprise and chagrin, neither the journalism, criminology nor English professor caught the error. Expectedly, none of the students asked caught the error, either. •***- In all fairness, the English professor pointed out a grammatical error I missed. "There is absolutely no reason for this situation to occur..." when "was" was the proper word. Somebody could - have manufactured a valid reason for the brawl after thinking about it for a day or two. but that wouldn't explain why it happened when It did. If university football coaches (or students and professors, for that matted do not know how to correctly use three'-letter words instead of two- letter words — anyone who ever stood on the sidelines knows that coaches use four-letter words proficiently — then how can their athletes, who are also supposed to be students, be expected to speak and write properly? Swimmers split pair, eye USC Invitational

The Bulldog swimmers opened their home season
with a resounding win over Sacramento State. The
Hornets were drowned 82-13 and 77-17.
respectively, by the FSU women and men.
The previous day. the Bulldog women swimmers
had opened their season against California at a
meet in Stockton. California came out on top 93-
29 against the Bulldogs.
Against Sacramento State, several Bulldogs
swam lifetime bests. For the women. Tammie
Furman swam lifetime bests of 2:16.73 in the 200-
yard individual medley (backstroke, butterfly,
breaststroke and freestyle) and 5:23^41 in the 500-
yard freestyle. Angel Tristan swam a personal best
of 5:18.01 in the 500-yard freestyle.
