Bulldog Sports California State University, Fresno Excuse me Terry PlerssorVDaiVy Collegian FSU sophomore forward Yannick Souvre weaves her way through traffic in lasHftlday's opening-round Taco Bell Classic win over Baylor. Souvre. a four-year French National team member, scored 36 points against the Bears en route to tourney MVP honors. Tuesday, December 5, 1989 This year's Gal Bowl is no Bulldog gimme Damn Jones It's Cal Bowl. er. California Raisin Bowl time again, sports fans, and this year, the Bulldogs will be there again, just like last year. Andjust like 1982 and 1985. Just for those who might not know. FSU has not lost In its three previous appearances. So.' it seems only logical that the 'Dogs should win again to 1989. If you look at the statistics. It seems like Ball State might as well get back on the plane and head back to Ball City or something. Fresno-State is 3-0 in Cal Bowl appearances, and the 1982 Bulldog team won. 29-28. despite being written offfor dead in the first half against "fowling Green. Since 1985, FSU hashad phenomenal success at Bulldog Stadium. Its record during this period is 32-1-1 for a .955 percentage, and its overall record is 46-10-1 {.816). Thlsisthe - best record on the West Coast for the period, as all good Bulldog supporters point out. Also, during the regular season, Fresno State walked through its schedule before stumbling to New Mexico. 45-22. While the Bulldogs were cruising through the 1989 season. Ball State was strugglingjust to survive. ThreeofBallState'ssevenwinswere decided by a total of 10 points. This includes a 23-21 victory over O-ll Kent State: not exactly a football powerhouse. So if you buy into the numbers game, FSU will win, and win big. However, the numbers dont tell the whole story, and this type of thinking is probably wrong. If the "Dogs are lucky, they might pull out a victory against Cardinals Saturday. Iftheyt are not. It could spell d-e-f-e-a-t. The Bulldogs must show that they have fully recovered from the humiliating loss at the hands of the undermanned but fired up Lobos. Saturday's game is much like the New Mexico game because no one expects the Cardinals to actually win. Going into the game. Ball State must be thinking that it has nothing to lose and everything togain. All the pressure is on the "Dogs, they hove to win in order to have a complete season. Ball State is just glad to have made it this far, so everything else will be icing on the cake. So, which Bulldog team will step onto the field Saturday, the one that destroyed the Big West Conference or the one that lost by 23 points to a 1 -10 team? But there is a fiip side. The Bulldogs might go out and blow^away the Cardinals, just to prove that the New Mexico game was a fluke. Jim Sweeftey does not take kindly to losing; It's something he hasn't had to deal with during the recent past. Make It yet anotherangle by adding in the David Letterman factor. Cal Bowl officials have been calling, writing and FAXing BSlTs most famous alum for a visit— or at least a plug on Late Night.
