during the overthrow. For30or40years
the only opposition voice was an ex¬
tremely small group of Intelligentsia
students, teachers, and news people.
"Before 1988 it was easy. The state
owned everything and the Communist
Party controlled the state, butwhat hap¬
pens when the party is out of power?
Transformation will be difficult and
painful."
