Bulldog Sports California State University, Fresno Monday, March 5,1990 Bulldogs split twinbill with Beavers By Debbie Speer Sports Writer Pitching dominated both games of a doubleheader split Saturday at Belden Field between Fresno State University and Oregon State University. The doubleheader was forced when the teams were stood up fora date Friday because of rain. The Bulldogs won the first game. '-if*, but dropped the nightcap. 2-1. to bring their pre-conference record to 9- 7. FSU pilcher Bobby Jones threw a, complete game in the opener, allowing eight scattered hits and one earned run.' He posted five strikeouts, but his strength was in keeping the ball down and forcing Oregon State to hit the ball into the infield most of the game. Jones Improved his record to 3-2. Right ftejder Jeff Borgese continued hig timely hitting In the first game for the 'Dogs. Borgese hit two for four in the first game, including a grand slam in the third inning. "1 don't hit a lot of home runs," Borgese said. ■ "I'm basically a line drive hitter, a scrappy guy who gets on base. IBeiden Field) is a great park to hit In: the wind always blows out. If I can get a fastball and I can turn on It. 1 can hit some home runs.1' Borgese said. Borgese had seven RBIs in two games for the 'Dogs. Borgese's grand slam put the finishing touch to a 10-run third inning for ihe Bulldogs, who also capitalized on sloppy pitching and infield play. The inning started with Phillip Romero being hff by a Jeff Otis pitch. Tim Costic doubted, and Borgese was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. Todd Johnson lined a shpt to right that should have been a single, but was able to take second on a throwing error from right fielder Aaron -Anderson, scoring Romero and Costic. Rick Lantrip doubled.-scoring Borgese and Johnson. Chris Falco scored on a single by Brian Wilson. The top of the order came up again and Romero singled. He was moved along when Costic got on base as a result of comebacker to the mound that bounced off Otis' fool. With Wilson at third, the bases were loaded to set up the Borgese grantl slam. Todd Johnson struck out to end the Inning. After struggling in his last two starts. Jones got 19 Beaver batters out on hits to the Infield. Without being overpowering. Jones moved the ball around with off-speed pitching and kept the Beavers at bay. hi game two, both pitchers sluck tooIT-speed pitching. Hoopsters lose home finale to Aggies 82-68 victory gives New Mexico State share of Big West title jr By Chris Branam Sports Writer FSU Athletic Director Gary Cun¬ ningham hopes prospective coaches did not see the Bulldogs' 82-68 loss to New Mexico State Saturday night. He\ might not get^uiy applicants. It was an ugly loss in every sense, as the athletic Aggies ran through, by, and at Fresno's once fearsome defense. Fresno State only led the game once (3- 0), and from there New Mexico State reeled off nine consecutive points, set¬ ting the tone for the game. "We had a number of breakdowns defensively," said FSU interim co- head coach Don Beck. "I think we came out rather flat, and that was something that not only myself, but the rest ofthe staff was afraid of." The 24th-ranked Aggies led 40-26 at haiftime, and increased Its lead to 22 points at 68-46 with about six minutes left in the game on Keith Hill's fast break lay-up. The closest Fresno State got alter that was 73-61. after two Bijou Bah/ free throws. New Mexico State improved to 25-3 overall. 16-2 in the Big West The win enabled the Aggies to share the regular season championship with UNLV. It Is the first time since UNLV joined the conference that it- did not win the title outright. Hill and James Anderson combined to score 37 points to lead NMSU. Hill had 21 points and Anderson chipped in 16 points with nine rebounds. Wil Hooker again led the Dogs with 21 points, including five three- pointers. Tod Bernard added 14 points and was the only other FSU player to score in double figures. "I thought we stuck with It. and came out and battled hard in the second half." Beck said. Fresno State once again was the victim of questionable offlciaUng, whfch Is starting to sound like a broken record. NMSU shot 36 free throws, connecting on 26, while FSU made all 14 of It's shots at the charity stripe. While a portion of New Mex¬ ico's free throws were attempted In the last five minutes when the "Dogs were fouling on purpose to stop the clock, a majority of the calls went the Aggies way. At one point, Chris Henderson, while diving for a loose ball, ran Into referee Jim Stupln. knocking him to the floor. The Selland Arena crowd gave Henderson a standing ovation. It has been that kind of season, folks. Fresno State lost its seventh consecutive game, dropping to 9-18 overall. 4-14 in the conference. FSU will play San Jose State In the Big West post season tournament Wednes¬ day at 9 p.m. in Long Beach.
