■ . * Collegian Sports California State University, Fresno Monday, April 18,1988 Bulldogs win 23rd straight Eighth-inning rally salvages 8-5 victory, school record By Brian Veneski *■* Sports Writer The record is broken. With an 8-5 victory over ihe UC Santa Barbara Gauchos Sunday, the No. 2-ranked Fresno State baseball team broke the school's previous consecutive victory mark of 22 by notching its 40lh win of the season. Trailing 4-2 going to the eighth inning the 'Dogs let loose as they scored six times to open up the contest on their way to their 11th PCAA victory against no defeats. The big hits in the eighth came from Brandon Mitchell, who had a two-run triple and Iridic Zosky, who smacked a two-run single. Fresno trailed 3-1 going to the fourth but Steve Pearse cut that lead in half with a solo home run making it 3-2. FSU softball sweeps 2 ranked teams By Steve Fountain Sports Writer An argument could have been made last Tuesday that the FSU softball team's move up to No. 2 in the nation was as much a case of other ranked teams losing as FSU winning. After all, the Bulldogs spill double headers with No. 14 Cal and No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona in the week prior to the release of the new rankings. But following FSLTs perfect performance over the weekend, the Bulldogs undjsputedly earned the right to hold the nation's No. 2 ranking. In fact, they may be making a case for the No. 1 spot FSU swept doubleheaders from No. 7 FuUerton on to complete a perfect 6-0 \ road trip through Southern California. A twin bill versus United States International scheduled for Sunday was cancelled due to muddy field conditions. In addition to solidifying its national ranking. FSU (40-11, 21-3) extended its lead in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association to four games over Fuller- ton and Long Beach, who are tied for second with 17-7 marks. FSU 4, Long Beach State 1 (10 innings): Carie Dever, who usually pitches the second game of doubleheaders, started the fust due to Melanie Parrent's bout with a lOO-degree temperature the night before. Dever (19-4) and 49er starter Annette Gonzales (21-3) each pitched shutouts for eight innings before giving up single runs in the ninth. But FSU scored three runs in the top of the tenth and held off ajiases-load threat in the bottom of the innings to win. FSU 3, Long Beach State 0: Parrcni looked anything but ill, as she struck oul nine of ihe first 12 batters she faced. Parrent (19-7) allowed just five hits an I finished with 10 strikeouts. The Bulldogs scored a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to complete the sweep. Please see SOFTBALL, page 7 But the Gauchos responded with a dinger of their own as Ed Lanpherc duplicated Pearse a shot with homer in the bottom of the inning, upping the lead to 4 2. The Bulldogs, though, came back with the big eighth inning to clinch the win and the record raisng their record to 40-6 on the year. On the day Tom Goodwin goi three of the Bulldogs nine hits in five plate appearances and stole his 47ih base of the season. Starting pitcher Rich Crane handled the mound dudes, going the distance and giving up only seven hits and four earned runs, while striking out four. The victory for Crane was his 13th of the season as he moved into a fifth place- tie with former-major leaguer Dick Ruth- ven on the FSU single-season victory On Saturday, the Bulldogs opened up the three-game set with a 4-2 victory, posting their record-tying 22nd win in a row. FSU was powered by the long ball and a superb pitching performance. Once again the Bulldogs fell behind early in the contest and had to come from behind to win. UCSB scored twice in the second inning on back to back doubles off of FSU starter John Salles, It appeared as if Salles may suffer through the same problems that he experienced against Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo last Tuesday night, when he went two and a third innings giving up seven runs. But Salles settled down to pitch a fine game as from then on he didn't allow a run as went all nine for his 11th victory of the year. He gave up only four hits on the day. Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Fresno got the first of its three homers as junior Mike Burton jolted UCSB left-hander Renay Bryand's pitch over the right field fence for his eighth homer of the year making the score 2-2. Then in the seventh, the nation's leading home run hitler. Lance Shebelut. got the eventual game winner for the 'Dogs with his 23rd homer of the year and Fresno would never look back. Burton did add a Utile insurance in the eighth as he ripped his second homer of the game, a 400-foot shot to center to lead off the inning and cap off a fine day. Fresno State will wrap up ihe series today as Erik Schullstrom goeson the mound for the Dogs, who will look to go to 12-0 in PCAA play. UC Santa Clara is the next obstacle for FSU, starting a two-game series with the "Dogs at Santa Clara on Tuesday.
