At 8:45 p.m. Sunday, two years of hard work and dedication came to a head. Ten volunteer artists melted and poured the bronze ingots (metal bars) in to four of the five sand and plaster molds that will be the bust of Mahatma Gandhi. The 900-pound Gandhi bust is the brainchild of artist James Earl Smith, ceramic instruc¬ tional support technician at CSUF. His inspria- ^ofhame from the creation of the Martin Luther King, Jr. bust Which sits in Fresno County's Courthouse Park. A $15,000 grant awarded last spring by the CSUF Associated Stu¬ dents Inc. helped bring a replica of the great spiritual, social and political leader of India to CSUF. Others in the crowd of onlookers said the beginning phasesofthe bronze-casting of the bust was a great sight. Approximately 60 fathered behind the Phebe Conley Art uilding. An official dedication ceremony for the busthas. been scheduled for Oct.2at noon. One of Gandhi's grandsons has confirnfed that he will be present for the event which will be commemorat¬ ing Mahatma Gandhi's 121st birthday. Mahatma Gqndh The main portion of Gandhi's hea d, however, was not ready for the Sunday night bronze-casti ng, The remai nder of the plaster mold still contains some of the wax filler, one step in the casting process. The wax must be removed before the bronze is poured into the 1/8-inch cavity between the outer and inner plaster. This cavity will "translate" the impression of Gandhi's face from clay to bronze, said Bob Barnes, a support technicianinthe project The next phase will have to wait another six days. The smoul¬ dering metal was lifted from the furnace and poured into the sandand plaster molds which will be Gandhi's ears, necli and shoulders and crown of the head. The entire process only lasted 20 min¬ utes. Afterabout a week of cool¬ ing, the plaster will be chipped away from the bronze and the pieces will be welded together. . Smith said "1 dreamed about [the Gandhi project] a long time ago. A lot of things havehappend to slow the proc¬ ess, but tonight there will be an end," said Smith.
