However, during the past few years I have been Inundated with commcrcials of questionable taste and veracity, uninformed opinions from both friends and foes, and snide re¬ marks from uninvolved busybod- les until I am mad enough to spit In fact one of the reasons I still smoke Is to defy those who would try and make me stop. Probably. you would say I'm c u t ling off my nose to spite my face. Big deal; It's my nose and face. Get otTmy back. I have always tried to be polite and considerate. If I know some¬ one doesn't like smoking In their home or at the table where they're eating. I dont smoke there. I never have. Similarly, I don't smoke In close, unventflated places If there's a chance It might bother someone. In large, well- ventilated areas, and especially outdoors, non-smokers are free to avoid my company. Even in my own home I try to avoid offending guests. But that's not good enough for some people. Suddenly they've become allergic to tobacco smoke. Why weren't they bothered before smoker-bashing became the "In" thing to do? Precisely because lt has become the "in* thing to do. Many people arent happy unless they have a Cause (notice they always say It with a capital letter, as If that were the only cause — excuse me. Cause — worth being Involved In). This Is just another phase of the activism left over from the '60s. I mean, the world Is going to hell all around us, so we have to do something, right? Industry won't clean up their 95 percent of the pollutloh. and the government I ignores any and all attempts to make lt accountable for our quality of life, so let's attack the smokers. Activists make me tired. v They're easy to spot. Activists have grossly overdeveloped but- tinsky bone right in the middle of their foreheads. It takes the place of their brains. Want to know what the 'right" stance Is oh anything? Just ask. Any th trig they don't want to abolish, they want to ban. Their battle cry Is'.' "We've got to do something." and the less expertise or experience they have, the louder they shout. They always seotfto be waving someone else's banner, mouthing someone else's Ideas. For ex¬ ample, the next time you hear someone loudly orating against abortion, ask him how many abortions he's had. Non-smokers, or Increasingly, anti-smokers, love to quote statistics to back up their stance against the noxious weed. I'd like to expand on Just one of those figures. The latest numbers (they keep changing, apparently gov¬ erned by a r>ercelved gullibilty * factor) I've seen Indicate that 315.000 people' win die from tobacco-related illnesses. That amounts to half of one percent of the people who smoke in this country. Those are not comforting figures, but they hardly mean certain death. Granted, no one would present tobacco use as something to enhance one's - health or well-being. It Just ain't so. Dut Irresponsible fear-mongcr- lng is despicable. There are many good arguments SeeHNESiLVE-t,paoei2 [: n -\ •'■.--:
