Nov. 2 and 3 the United Black Students of Central California, a high school organization, held their annual regional conference here in Fresno at the Holiday Inn. CSUF was asked to participate In a portion of the conference dealing "with college organizations and ) Outreach services. /! I would like to thank - all my brothers and sisters who took time out of their busy schedules to come and participate in such a worthy project: the education of the next generation. The African American organisations at CSUF were richly represented by Intelligent and articulate members. Together we showed a united front and reinforced the need for education at all levels. Special thanks to Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity (for showing them how to do it right), Mr. Sam Boyd (for conceiving the idea), and Mr. Angulus Wilson >—" (forgetting the message across in a way they really could relate to). • Remember, it is our time. It's our .' - .- turn, and it/s everbody*s future. . Mary Anne Drummond Chair Community Relations Committee African Student Union Human March Editor. This letter is written to Inform the campus community of the "Human March" that will take place Nov. 7 on our campus. The march will begin at 11 a.m. in the Free Speech Area. We will march throughout the campus and return to the Free Speech Area by noon. The purpose of the march Is to demonstrate that we. as a community, are sick of the dlscrtrnlnatlon that is taking place in our society. It Is to show that we are sick of the racism, sexism, homophobia and facto that is all too apparent on our campus and our society asweD. We are marching to show that such sickness will no longer be tolerated amongst ourselves. It will also be an opportunity for people to peacefully express themselves while sending a powerful message to our university administration that we are saving no to discrimination. I feel that if we students get the ball rolling and start saying no to racial intolerance then the administration will have no choice but to follow suit as well Perhaps we can put an end to that Ignorance called racism. Others were advocating a school policy which would ' sanction people responsible for defamatory material. The Task Force is seeking legal advice about avenues that could be used to restrict certain types of speech: however, the prior restraint of speech issue is a difficult one. A person's speech can be stopped if{hetrspeech'constitutes a "clear and present danger." Or if one person's speech slanders another, the-other can sue for damages. But generally a person cannot be stopped before they speak in an open forum because of a fear that their speech may not be acceptable. I say we need to go further than demanding action from the administration. We must look beyond the Institution in dealing with this threat to the emotional and physical well-being of our brother and sister students. Why should we wait passively for "those in charge* to do something? We do have power. In my opinion, the overwhelming majority of CSUF students support the right of all students to feel safe and secure and respected on this campus.
