Sports: The Collegian • February 11, 1991 6 Stanford: Unranked Bulldogs shock top team with timely hitting and excellent fielding Continued from page 5 first collegiate start. Stanford avoidede a sweep Sunday as freshman Willie Adams pitched befuddled the Dogs' with a six-hit, nine strikeout performance. Stanford got on the board in the bottom of the third when Steve Solomon belted a two-out solo homer to put the Cardinal up 1-0. The Cardinal struck for two more runs in the fifth when Roger Burnett launched a two- run homer to extend the Stanford lead to 3-0. Burnett's homer ended the day for Bulldog starter Steve Soderstrom, who lasted 4 2/3 innings while striking out three batters. Fresno State rebounded to tie it in the top of the seventh when Noel led off the inning with a single and scored on Todd Johnson's double. Jason Wood then came up and hit his first career home run at Fresno State. However, Stanford came back in the bottom of the eighth with three big runs. Tallman led off with a double, chasing FSU reliever Robbie Saitz, and scored one out later on David Holbrook's double. Holbrook advance to third on a fly out to right field and then was balked home by new Bulldog pitcher Mike Salazar. Solomon then followed with his second homer of the game to end the scoring. Solomon and Burnett led the Cardinal by combining for six hitsintenat-bats. FSU had not made an error until Saturday's contest, when Jason Wood booted a ball that was followed by Tallman's dinger to put Stanford up 3-0. However, defense kept the close and hitting put the Bulldogs back into that game and helped them all weekend long. Noel finished the series 7 for 12 at the plate, including his second homer of the season Friday. NOTES- FSU was held below ten hits in a game for the first time in six games this season... Stanford came into the game averaging eight runs an outing but only had 11 for the series. Collegian Sports...
