Letters to the Editor ita<M^»AFds,m 2 A lettrfrum a vary, vary conserned stoodnt [sic] i is a College Senior at Fresno State, CSUF, California State Jniversity Fresno, Fresno, Fresno State University. I try to read parts of the Fresno Bee and the Daily Fresno Collegian inbetween my english and m^thclassisand am very upset about what is going on around me. The 2 events thai seem to alwais be in both papers are whattocalltheschoolandwhat racil group will get to ha ve there person be in charge of my education, speakingasagradu- ating senior i would like to sea lessconsemonwhatthecolour of there skin is and more on there cualifications and ideas are to help improve the edica- tion system here in Fresno. I also think we should call it CSUF cause that's easier to spell. Not one ounce of sincerity, Chris Haydn-Meyer The Sarcastic arguments don't make the grade in graduation dispute Last week I succumbed to a fit of apathy. I decided that I would let this graduation issue rest. I would let other people carry it forward if they felt like i:. I just didn't have either the time or energy to continue. But, after the unprovoked and un¬ professional molestation I re¬ ceived from the "oh so liberal" staff of the Collegian, my tem¬ per flared once more. For this, 1 thank you. lam, ofcourse, assumingthat the view printed in Tuesday's paper is that of everybody at the Collegian, and not just a whimpy staff or column writer too afraid to print his/her byline. After analltooflowery open¬ ing that leads us through solar systems and symbolic matur¬ ity, yourcolumn states thatThe Collegian has received a "pleth¬ ora" of letters that show a'dis¬ placed anxiety" over how the graduation ceremony is going to progress. Perhaps there are a few more points to ponder. First, let'sdiscuss "plethora.' I don't know where you grew up, but the rest of the west coast has steadily come to the conclusion that this is an over¬ worked word that is used only by vain individuals who feel that the very usage of such a word makes them educated. This is similar to 50-year-old business men buying Porsches and cruising the beaches in an attempt to prove just how young and attractive they are. It just doesn't work. This has been a lesson on professionalism. 1 am just a letter writer. I am not consid¬ ered to be a professional jour¬ nalist. Keeping this viewpoint in mind, I can sling mud that is dripping with sarcasm and rhetorical] day long if 1 feel ike it. As pseudo- professionals, the staff at the Collegian should not cross that line. That is what is supposed to separate the professional from the unpro¬ fessional. The column states that those of us who want a real gradu¬ ation ceremony are whining brats "who want things their way right now." How would you 1 i ke us to convey our legi ti - mate complaint if not through letters? Through violence or illegiai activities? Would that make us more mature? If you are truly interested in immaturity, I suggest that you compare the letters to the edi¬ tor that you have received with yourowncolumn. Your fourth grade sarcasm rings loud and clear. Now, let's really discuss this "plethora"oflettcrs.lfyouhavc truly received so many letters, shouldn't you consider the opinion of all of these students instead of calling it displaced anxiety? Maybe we have a point. If you had a high G.P.A. and your school didn't have any form of Dean's List or honor roll, wouldn'Lvou feci cheated7 It doesn't aficct your educa¬ tion, but it is still an accom- plishemcnt that should be ac¬ knowledged, and one that would be recognized at anv other university. This is how I vicwourgraduationcercmonv- The graduation ceremony is not what makes a person's education. Similarly, a wed¬ ding doesn't make a marriage, yet these ceremonies are what we celebrate. They mark moments of personal achieve¬ ment in our lives. I four gradu¬ ation ceremony is as personal as junk mail, then what is the point? Ronald W.White, Jr. Editor's Note - CSUF has both a Dean's List (for students achieving a 3-5 GPA) and a President's List (for students who have achieved a 4.0 GPA.) Editor? Editorial? Who is that masked writer? To whomever wrote that piece on graduation today: Obviously your name "just doesn't matter" either or you would've had the balls/ovaries to sign it and be counted for who you are; not just what you have done.
