The Collegian • April 8, 1991 Sprinklers keep going in the rain •Maintenance workers hope new timer-run systems will correct water wasting problems By Eric Bumey Collegian Staff Writer Due to an error in Friday's Collegian this story was not run in its entirety. During the constant down¬ pour of rain, CSUFs automatic sprinkler system was also watering campus lawns. Jerry Galvan, manager of grounds for CSUF plan t opera¬ tions, said tests were being run to locate and correct existing problems with the timer-run sprinkler controllers. "We've had problems since last winter (with theautoma tic sprinkler system)," he said- "I told our people to go ahead CAMPUS PHOTOGRAPHERS: Earn cash for your photos -SELL THEM TO THE COLLEGIAN! Galvan said that most of the problems have been in the center of campus, with the older buildings and current landscaping work being done on the Music Building. "We will continue to have major problems near the older parts of the campus," he said. "Some of the pipes under¬ ground are 30 years old; they are rusted and could pop un¬ der pressure at any time." Galvan reported very few problems on the east side of campus, past the Thomas Ad¬ ministration Building, and the west side, by the North and South Gymsand athletic fields. "The systems out there are more up to date; the buildings are newer and the pipes are plastic," he said. Morning and evening patrols are now being done to ensure that the systems are perform¬ ing properly. Galvan said that having to monitor the 110 sprinkler con¬ trollers on campus isa difficult task, but he believes plant operations are up to the chal¬ lenge of improving the current situation. "We're striving for real fine- line projection," he said. "The upgrading of the system goes in phases. We want to u pgrade the system from the worst parts on up." In his 16 years at CSUF and two years at his current posi¬ tion, Galvan said the winter freeze and drought.along with the failure of old pipes, have been the worst of his tenure. "I'm positive, though, be¬ cause this has kept us on our toes," he said. "The environmental impact of it is more of a challenge for "Applications are currently being accepted for: Editor - The Collegian Editor - La Voz de Aztlan Editor - Uhuru Na Umoja Editor - Hye Sharzhoom Deadline for applications is April 19.
