Sports Examining the ills of college football Bv Chris Branam This is the time of year the college football junkies come out of the woodwork. Every Saturday is filled with hours upon hours of college football coverage, and I'm not even counting the pregame and postgame shows. Oh boy. Pardon me if 1 just can't get excited about this ritual of fall. Everywhere I turn, some college football-nik is in my face making a list of his favorite things about college football. Those people can now move on io another story, because you're not going to like what I have to say. I hate today's college game. With that said, I decided to make a list of the things that reallv have led metodislike the college football season: So-called "student-athletes'' who can't pass high school courses being accepted to institutions of higher learning. Cmon, folks. It's not the athletes'fault. It's the college admissions'fault. When schools such as Notre Dame or Southern , California tell a guy that he has a free ride to their school for four years, what are they going to say? No? The football players not being paid. They bring in millions of dollars for the school and area, but can't even get a job as long as they re on scholarship. The hypocrisy is sickening. Pompous Alumnae. This is a special breed of "fans.'' The Pompous Alumnae give thousands of dollars in slush funds for their respective alhlectic departments, but probably couldn't name the team's starting quarterback. Or wouldn't care, either. Notre Dame I hate everything about that school. The Golden Dome, Lou Holtz, the dancing leprechaun, the Pompous Alumnae, the NBC contract, etc. I've got to stop thinking about the Flailing Irish; I'm getting nauseous. Steroids. It's out of hand. Cheating. Ditto. Those silly Bulldog Stadium expansion commercials. If you build it, they will.come" Pleeeeeeeaase. Gag. « "Neon" Data Sanders. I know, he's not th college a nymore, but he's the poster boy forriie Spoiled Arrogant College Football Players of the Eighties. Player* like Sanders were created by the Pompous Alumnae. FSU spikes Cal-Poly for title By David Donnelly DC Sports Writer It was a smashing debut for new Fresno State Women's volleyball head coach Lindy Vivas and freshman middle blocker Paola Paz Soldan, who comes to FSU from playing on the Peruvian junior and senior national teams. The Bulldogs, led by Paz Soldan, defeated the Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo Mustangs 13-15, 16-14, 15-12 and 17-15 before 425 emotionally charged fans at the FSU North Gym Saturday night to capture the fifth annual Dan Gamel Volleyball Invitational championship. It was the third consecutive tournament championship for the Bulldogs (4-0). Paz Soldan was named the tournament most valuable player, amassing 92 kills. "I'm really happy. This really doesn't compare to the level I've come from and I don't really want to compare this because 1 like this a lot better," Paz Soldan said. "Where I come from there was a lot of competition, not only between teams, but also between the players and it was very hard to play. You had to win your play." The victory was the second time in two days the Bulldogs came away with extremely close victories against the Mustangs. The 'Dogs lallied for a 12- 15, 16-14, 1.5-8 and 15-10 victory against the Mustangs Friday night. With that victory FSU earned an automatic berth into the championship match as a .•CTu.'t of being the only undefeated team in the tournament. The vicury on Friday against SLO was Fresno State's first against the Mustangs in 13 tries since Dec 1984. "Well, hopefully it means we know we can boat them and there will be no hesitation the next time we take the court with them and we do play them again at their place. It will be tough because they have a loud, vocal crowd," Vivas said Saturday. After Friday's match. Vivas said she was unaware that the 'Dogs had gone so long in between victories against SLO. The biggest reason the Bulldogs were able to defeat the Mustangs was their ability to come back in the second games of both matches. In the first game Friday night, the Mustangs were able to erase an 11-4 Fresno State lead with an 11-1 run to beat the Bulldogs, 15-12. In the second game it was FSU's turn to come back from a big deficit. With SLO seemingly cruising to a second game win leading 13-6, the 'Dogs went on a 10-1 run to defeat the Mustangs, 16-14. The Mustangs had opportunities to dose out the game, leading 14-10, but could not capitalize. This win in game two seemed to have ignited a fire under the Bulldogs as FSU cruised to relatively easy victories in games three and tour. During game two. Vivas called a couple of timeouts that seemed to help the Bulldogs. The coaches just told us to keep siding out and we were going to win," Julie Florendo, senior outside hitter, said Friday night. The 'Dogs were led in kills Friday night by Paz Soldan, who had 28. This was one away from the tournament record of 29 set by Fresno State junior outside hitter Andrea Radmitovich in the 1990 tournament. Radmilovkh also added 12 kills. Freshman setter Jenny Strdtzoff had 36 assists for the Bulldogs. SLO was paced by junior middle blocker Lad Perlstrom with 15 Mils and See Volleyball page 14 Phase one of expansion completed on time By Richard James DC Sports Writer' Fresno State announced . last week that an expanded Bulldog Stadium is ready for football Although some landscaping and cleanup have yet to be done, the stadium is functional, according to Susan Aldrich, FSU's director of facilities and .planning.
