Appearing as Sir Toby Belch in ihc S hakespearean comedy, Twelfi h Night, now play ingat Second Space Theater, Wcstcnbcrg is one of several CSUF drama studenu and alumni who perform in the play. Senior Kris Garvis, who plays Olivia, said she auditioned for the play because she loves Shakespeare's work. She wanted to go outside of CSUF's system to gain experience and see how other theaters and directors handle their productions. Senior Da vidStcllhom.whoplays Sir Andrew Agucchcck, agreed, "The plays wc do ai Fresno State we only get io do for two weekends, and this one runs for seven weeks. "I wanted to sec what it was like to do a longer show. I wanted to sec what it was like outside of Fresno State." Twelfth Night was put on the Second Space schedule at the request of director Elizabeth Fiestcr. The comedy is Ficstcr's favoriic script and she has directed the play once before, for her masters project at CSUF. "I like the fact that it's a whole play about being in love," Ficster said. "How we act when we're in love. How much we base on appearances and whai wc do based on appearances." Twelfth Night is a comedy all about love. It lells ihc story of Viola, ship-wrecked and alone in the strange land of Ilyria. She disguises herself as a young man for safety and goes to work for Duke Orsino. Orsino is love with the beautiful Olivia, who is mourning die loss of her brother. All ihc while, ihc members of Olivia's household play practical jokes on her pompous steward, Malvolio. Orsino, who continuously sends messengers to woo Olivia, sends his newest messenger boy, Viola in disguise. Olivia, who docs not love the Duke, finds herself in love with his messenger. This creates a strange love triangle and the comic complications begin to multiply. For many of the student and alumni actors, perfecting theirchar- actcrs was a difficult challenge. "1 really like the play and I like a lot of the male characters. Any one of these characters in the play is a challenge, " said CSUF alumnus. Bob Maus, who plays Fcste, a jester in the play. Maus was challenged in this role because he has to sing in the play and has never suns in a show before. "The most interesting thing about the character is he's smarter than everyone else and he knows it," Maus said. "He knows what's going on most of the lime, and he likes thai." According to Stellhorn, "I found it an extreme challenge through the rehearsal process to find the character. He doesn't have a whole lot of lines thai tell you about much aboul him. "Sir Andrew is kind-of a sensitive guy, but he's noi too bright and he's very gullible. The challenge was to find the mannerisms io go along wiih his stupid comments." Stellhorn said that he didn't have to practice his character outside of rehearsals, but he found himself thinking a lot about Sir Andrew. When asked about her character, Garvis said when Olivia first comes out, she's repressed and in mourning. "Nothing's there to amuse her; nothing's there to take her out of it. If she wasn't in mourning, she'd be the life ofthe house, kicking up her heels so to speak, and having a liule fun." Garvis said. Being a student and acting in a production can often be difficult, according to the students. "It's really hard. I have 20 units and also work in the scene shop in Fresno Slate's theatre department. "Now that we're in the performance, it's not too bad because we get a few nights off, but during rehearsals it was very hard," Stellhorn said.
