rz Insight April IS, IMS ELECTION 83 Tmhe candidates for LVP The candidates for A Tim Sheehan My name is Tim Sheehan, and I am running for tbe position of A.S. Legislative Vice President. I I Senator for Graduate Studies, " I am appalled at tbe way tbe ' Senate operates. The at- 5 mosphere is often confused, I with some members (and ■ spectators) unsure of what's going on. Is this bow a decision-making body should operate? Certainly not! As a candidate, I realize some goals and objectives that I would like to see accomplished for the A.S.; I also realize, however, that before I consider the power and authority of tbe position that might help me achieve these goals, I must consider the responsibilities — the basic duties and obligations — that are inherent in the position: to act as chairman of tbe A.S. Greg Garrett My name is Greg Gar- | rett, I am working towards a business degree with a computer science emphasis. . I have worked at every [ level of student government > here at CSUF. My first semester during my I freshman year I served on H two faculty /student commit- I tees. That same year, I was appointed by the Associated Student Body President to fill a vacancy on the student senate. I gained valuable knowledge concerning Senate procedures, the budget process, and how to work together toward a common goal. I also gained respect as a motivator and as a dedicated worker. That respect carried over to this year earning me the difficult yet rewarding appointment to the Academic Senate. The Academic Senate consists of Dr. Haak, several vice-presidents, deans and key faculty representatives. This exposure has taught me tbe importance of professionalism and hard work. My extensive experience with the administration, the faculty and the students has placed me in a unique position. I have many ties with campus organizations to keep me informed with student needs and concerns. I also have many ties with administrative officials to see to a strong student voice. My goal is to be the student's link to the inside operation of government on campus. Presently, there are many important issues to face, as well as many which are ahead. As Legislative Vice-President I will see to having a cohesive and coordinated Senate which will be prepared to deal with these issues. I have the knowledge and leadership abilities to meet this challenge. I am dedicated towards a change in student government. Do your part and vote GARRETT for Legislative Vice—President. Patrick Young My name is Partrick * Young. I am 26 years old and am pursuing a BA in Social . Science. My main qualifications are, I feel, my past life experiences, my current in- ■ volvement, and perhaps most ■ important, my reasons for I running for office in the first ** place. I am involved in politics primarily out of disappointment for the political system as it exists and operates in this country, and as my reaction to what I yfrnr as intolerable situations we are all confronting sucrPas pollution and destruction of our environment, a steady decline of power of the average citizen to. influence the dealings of his or her government, and arms race that is out of control, the list goes on as we ail well know. This has spurred me to political activism, and what I would hope will spur all of us someday to take charge of our government and our future. I would have to say that I am probably a workaholic; I would also like to say that I am good at what I do. I truly enjoy working hard for a just and necessary cause. I assure you that I will take this same spirit with me if I am elected to the spot of LVP. My other strong points, I believe, are my experiences the last five years working with and heading up grass goots political organizations in our community. I am currently president of the Nuclear Freeze group on campus, as well as sitting on the steering committee for the county organization. My primary concern at this time however must be a deescalation of ever increasing student fees. It is my duty to do the will of the student body; there is no issue that directly affects more of us than this. I have begun working on a task force to directly lobby to keep student fees more in line with reality. D. Hayes Haskins , In the past Associate Student Senators and Executive officers have worked hard to further their own selfish interest. They-have not con- - sidered the students needs or <. the impact of their actions on f^§ the students. We students have had to , I put up with their impotent >aaaV i and self indulgent achievements and fiascos. In Fall 81 some Associated Student Senators attempted to ban Coors beer on campus. Also that senate wasted $10,000 on the design of a fancy Free Speech area. This year Associate Student Senate wasted more money on a satellite College Union. There has been no leadership in the Associated Student Senate since Chris Kaufman stopped the movement to ban Coors beer. And this year's Associated Student _ Shannon Trimble I believe the Legislative Vice-President must be in tune with students needs, and if elected, I intend to maintain an open line of communication with the students on campus. I believe in cultural unity, and I would like to see the different groups on campus working 'closer together. I'm the chairman of the Committee For Higher Education, which is tbe committee working to keep fee increases down. Fee increases are a major issue facing students, and one that every candidate must address. I believe I've already shown my desire to keep feea down. tbe main function of tbe Legislative Vice-President is to chair the Senate. It requires a person of tact and common sense. The Legislative Vice-President must be self motivated, and able to motivate others to action. He Martin Togni I decided to run for I Legislative Vice-President I because I see a need for a ■ new beginning. If elected, I ■ foresee a Senate body that is I more cohesive than tbe I past - one which is more ! pragmatic. The Senate deals with many financial matters. The Legislative Vice- President, who runs tbe Senate meetings, needs to have experience in fiscal matters. Being chairman of tbe Finance and Budget Committee has opened my mind to the problems facing the ' ** and organizations that came to the ted Students for funding. To be sure, a student leader needs to be sensitive to student problems. My senatorship in the past year has Increased my sensitivity. For me. my sensitivity started very early In life. Since I am the son of Swiss immigrants, learning English as a second language has opened my eyes to the problems facing minorities. If elected, I will have many important priorities. I feel that adequate office hours to deal with students at a personal level will eliminate much of the "ivory tower" image that student government has exemplified in the past. Invoking a spirit at pragmatism in the Senators is another priority. We need a task -oriented senate that will get tbe job done and a responsible LVP to make sure it does. These are promises which I Intend to keep — not mere words on paper. Yolanda Davis Senate and conduct the meetings in an organized manner. To do this requires experience, and I believe my ex: perience and qualifications are more than adequate to fulfill those obligations: Two semesters Fresno City College A.S. Legislative Vice President; One semester FCC A.S. President; One year serving on state Commission on Legislation; Numerous posts in civic and community organizations; currently A.S. Senator for Graduate Studies. Much of this experience is also applicable in achieving some of the goals and objectives I have. Tbe ability to put things into terms that people can understand comes from my undergraduate training aa a journalism major, and this ability enables me to draw people with differing viewpoints closer-to a common ground that both can work with. This is sorely needed not only to draw tbe Senators closer to decisions in a meeting, but also the students they represent closer together in unifying tbe student population on this university. \irsi I am from Oakland, CA, di I Technical High School where I was involved in student I government. I graduated a year early and decided to attend CSUF. I am a business I administration major and my option is hospital administra- Ition. Experiences which qualify me for the job: —This year I was chairperson for African Peoples History month which required an extensive amount of organizing and planning. —I enjoy accounting and received an "A" in required accounting course for business students. Four out of my five semesters here at CSUF I have been on the Dean's List for High Academic Achievement. —I am a dedicated and responsible student which carries over into anything I'm Involved In. —I love working with people and have worked in tbe library for 3 years now. Currently, I am also working as a peer advisor in EOP. The position would be very beneficial to me because it would give me some actual changes or policies I would enact as AVP. Changes in policies I would enact as AVP: —There is a senate unallocated surplus in which I would make some SO percent is set aside for fall semester and SO percent for spring semester so that there will not be a shortage on funds for programs later in the year. —I Would keep the senate informed on the staus of the budget by reporting balance every week. —I would originate all groups who are budgeted funds before they actually receive them. I would also be so careful as not to make a mistake in double debiting or crediting accounts, which occurred this semester. Chrissy Pahl My name is Chrissy Pahl, and I am running for the position of Administrative Vice-President I chose to run for this position because of my high interest in CSUF, I and more Importantly, tbe students who receive their education here. I am familiar with Senate land its procedures. I pride myself in being an energetic, motivated, and intuitive person. I am ready to work for the students and would .like to see stronger communication lines between the Senate and the student body. The decisions made by tbe Senate have a major impact on the student body, and I think tbe students should be made more aware of these decisions. I take pride in CSUF and am certain I meet all qualifications necessary to fill the position of Administrative Vice-President. I appreciate your support when voting for Administrative Vice-President (A.V.P.), on April 12.13 and 14th. Michael Baladjanian My involvement in stu- I dent government at CSUF ' dates back to last year when I served as senator for the School of Engineering. I strongly feel that it is the job of tbe AVP to ensure and j facilitate responsible spen- • ding of student dollars. To do 3 this, the AVP must stay abreast oTbudget status and work diligently with our accountant to keep accurate and up-to-date books. I am confident that I have tbe energy and ability to keep up with tbe day to day work load. As we have seen this year, it is essential for the AVP to follow through on this day to day work in order to avoid spending fiascos and false levels of unallocated funding. I also feel that it is essential to pull tbe College Union Board and the Associated Students together. As chairman, I would facilitate better communications between these two groups to ensure stronger representation for the students of CSUF. It has been to long that these two bodies have been at odds. This past year saw vast improvements in communications and these must continue. I intend to do just this. Matthew W. Rowan My name is Matthew W. j Rowan. I am seeking tbe of- I fice of Associated Students I Administrative Vice- $ President. I am currently a I senior majoring in Industrial I Technology, with my em- . I phasis being In the area of [ electronics communication. I I am a member of the Sigma ' Chi Fraternity, and while serving as both Vice-President and President I worked closely with tbe budget giving me valuable experience in financial matters and money manager The Associated Students Senate has a fiscal responsibility winch it owes tbe students they represent. We must reevaluate our existing programs on the basis of participation and student service. As Administrative Vice-President I will serve as a voting member of the Senate's Finance and Budget Committee. It will be my job to back the funding of programs or events which promote student interaction. Here is a list of a few which fit this category: The Daily Collegian, In- tramurals, International Programs, Tbe Greeks, Vintage Days, Tbe Tutorial Center, and functions held in the College Union. The student radio station KFSR 90.7 fm. is another of these programs which benefit both the students and the community. While Administrative Vice-President I will encourage student involvement, and will make myself . available to them as someone tbey can approach for information concerning tbe Senate. My job will be to serve the students and represent their ideas. LETTERS Senate has had no sense of purpose or tangible direction. Yet, all of these past and present senators want to be the Associate Student President and Legislative Vice President. Sure some have been hard workers but none have shown that they have the qualities required for leadership of the Associate Student Senate. As the Legislative Vice President D. Hayes Haskins would bring leadership, sensible purpose and perceptible direction to the Associate Student Senate. That purpose is to serve the genuine wants of the students. The necessity for a 24-hour library, better lighting at night, more student parking and yellow slot parking after 3:30 p.m. for students, a stop on parking fee increases and more student tickets for home basketball games. To attain these for the students are the goals of D. Hayes Haskins. That's why D. Hayes Haskins should be elected Legislative Vice President. He is a student for students. must be able to work with different types of people and personalities. I believe I'm that person. I'm very proud of Ms university, and I believe that I can serve a majority of students, even on a campus as diverse as this one. j—, The Associated Students Senate is a learning experience, much like the publication of this paper. We on the Senate sometimes make mistakes but I believe we try to do our best. As Legislative Vice-President, I will work to see that Senators are well enough informed to make a conscious decision. There are those who feel that if tbey control tbe Senate things would be better, but these people forget that the Legislative Vice- President doesn't vote, and cannot control the votes of tbe Senators. I can't promise to change this or that on the Senate, because one person can not do that on his own, and I would be lying to say I could. All I promise, if elected Legislative Vice-President, is to work as hard as I know how, and to do the best job I can. Broadside for the plucky boys To the Editor: The boys, Sean and Scott, are such a plucky pair! It is downright cute of them to write their arrogant little diatribe and call it "Tbe New Federalist Papers" — sounds so grown-up and all I It's clear these jolly boys are part of the "some people" that "always will be better than others," and it is a sophomore's dream come true that the "wealthy and sophisticated elite," to which the boys evidently feel they belong, shall inherit the earth. The only criticism I have is that the inane burbling of these naive darlings is given so much coverage in a paper that generally does much better. The content of the recent one (on "Democracy") is far more a declaration of righteous arrogance than a discussion of anything... it is the graf- fitti of tbe children of Phillistines, nothing more. So change the kids and put them to bed, /might, they're up way past bedtime, and they're really beginning to smell bad! More reactions from the Tule^ To the Editor: J* —'I am writing in response to Dave Marsh's February 23 article, "Tule Indians live under U.S. trust." Marsh did a onesided view of life on the Tule River Indian Reservation. His article mentions only tbe negative aspects of reservation life. I believe a good journalist should try to uncover all aspects of a story, not just part of it. There are several mistakes in tbe article including parts where Marsh states tbe campgrounds and gas station on tbe reservation are for Indian use only. The "crumbling, boarded up building" that Marsh said "unbelievably still bouses a gas station," is tbe Tule River Youth Center. The Center provides tutoring, •' Alt readers are invited to svnte to Insight We ask that your letters be brief as possible, and they may be shortened still. Please include your name, signature, and phone number. Letters must be legible. Drop them oHinthe Insight office or mail to: CSU, Fieano —Gary Simpson counseling, after-school activities and transportation from after-school sports, etc. The "big brick building" Marsh said bouses the community center and also the medical center,- act educational center and alcohol treatment center, in fact is only tbe community center. Maybe one out of four isn't bad, but Marsh was just guessing. Tbe Tule River Indian Health Center (across the road) provides medical, optometric and dental services to Native Americans residing in Tulare County. The Tule River Alcohol Program (located up tbe road) provides detoxification and withdrawal detoxification/recovery services to American Indians 18 years and older. The Tule River Community Center houses the tribal offices, conference room, community hall and kitchen, the Tule River Branch of the Tulare County Library, tribal fiscal department, and the Indian Child Welfare Program. In addition to the programs mentioned above, tbe Reservation also has it's own monthly tabloid newspaper and a food distribution program which also serves tbe Santa Rosa Rancheria, Lemoore; Table Mountain Rancheria, near Friant; Cold Springs Rancheria, near Tollhouse; and Santa Inez Rancheria in Santa Barbara County.
