54 FRESNO STATE COLLEGE THESIS REQUIREMENT Most master's degree cun:icula at Fresno State College require the prep:mn:.ion of a thesis or a project. For the mastet· of arts degree in education and for the master of science degrees in business, mathematics, and physics, spechtlly designed or selected seminars may be substituted for the thesis .requirement (sec Bus 291, .Ed 295, 2%, 297, 298) . The Co11'1mittee on Graduate Study has prepared a statement describing the general college policy on rescru·ch in the master's degree program. Theses, pmjects, and other types of research are defined. In general, regulations for the project a.re identical to those of the thesis. 1. To be eligihle to eruoll for thesis or project (299), a student must have (a.) been advanced to candidacy for the master's degree. (b) maintained a B (3.0) average on his contract program. (c) completed at least six un.its on the Fresno campus of Fresno State College. (d) completed any course in research techniques required by his major depart-ment. (e) secured a thesis committee, consisting of a chairman and at least two other members. (f) secured approval of his thesis plan from the division or depa1·tment graduate committee before his committee submits thesis committee assignment (Form 13) to the Graduate Office. 2. A student may enroll in 299, thesis o.r project, at any 'time aftet' he has met the requirements listed in (a) through (f) above. However, if a student fails co enroll within one semester (excluding summer sessions) after his official acceptance by a thesis committee, the committee is dissolved and its members are relieved of fm·ther obligation to the student. 3. A stud nt whose thesis is planned to extend over mo.re than the semester in which he fll'st enrolls in 299 may receive an ln Progress (IP) g.rade, which may remain in effect for one full year after being recorded. lf at rhe end of this time the thesis hus not been completed, the chairman of the tht-~i.~ committee through the Graduate Office will request the changing of the Io Progccss to a clen.r \Vithdnwal. Wid1 the recording of a W, the thesis committee and the library arc relieved of any further thesis obligation to the student. After the .recording of a W for 299, the student must re-enroll and apply for a new committee in each subsequent semester or summer session during which he u~e the library or draws on faculty time in connection with his thesis. The new committee will not nece~-sarily be composed of the same personnel and is not necessarily bound by the decisions of the former committee. 4. The student and Ius thesis chairman should set a deadline for the completion of the semifinal draft, no late1· than four weeks l>eforc the last day of scheduled finnl examinations. This date should be early cuough so that the chairman and the other members of the committee can clear the draft udor~: Lhe student must meet the deadline for clearance by the technical adviser. S. Before a thesis is oflicially accepted hy the C.omrnittec on Graduate Swdy, it must meet the approval of the committee's technical adviser, who passes on matters of format, documentation aud quality of writing. The semifinal draft, initialed by the th~ is cb:W:man as acceptable with technical corrections, should be submitted ro the technical adviser in the College Librruy at least three weeks before the last day of scheduled final examinations.
