16 2013-2014 California State University, Fresno General Catalog The Kenneth L. Maddy Institute was established to honor the legacy of one of California’s most principled and effective legislative leaders of the last half of the 20th Century by engag-ing, preparing, and inspiring a new generation of governmental leaders for the 21st Century. The institute’s work is focused in three key areas: government leader-ship, policy analysis, and citizen participation. Government Leadership – Scholar Intern Programs Our work in the area of govern-ment leadership involves preparing the next generation of political and governmental leaders. One of the most important means to accomplish this is to provide intern scholarships for university students so they can be exposed to, learn from, and be men-tored by today’s political and govern-mental leaders. The Maddy Institute provides opportunities to complete an intern scholarship in a congressional office, state legislator’s office, or local government in Fresno and other cites in the San Joaquin Valley, Sacramen-to, and Washington, D.C. Students from all majors are encour-aged to apply. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have com-pleted 60 units by the time they begin their internship. Application require-ments can be found at maddyinstitute.org/govt/internships/ index.html. Policy Analysis Our work in the area of policy analysis involves providing a non-partisan, interdisciplinary, fact-driven analysis of public policy issues. We accomplish this through the Maddy Daily e-newsletter and our public affairs programs — The Maddy Report TV program and The Maddy Forum radio program/podcast. The goal of these programs is to encour-age critical questioning to foster a deeper understanding of the issues facing our nation, state, and region by a thoughtful, objective, fair, and The Kenneth L.
