36 FRESNO STATE COLLEGE In return for a fee of $10, collected at the time of registration, each student and faculty member is isst1ed a Fresno Stare College Association, Inc., membership card which permits the noJder to participate in all activities of the association and admits the holoer to association affai1-s without charge or at a reduced admission fee detennined by the board of directors of the association. The principal activities supported by this fee are atltletics, publications, music, drama, and cultural activities. STUDENT PUBLICATIONS J\ lcmbcrship in the F.resno Smte College Association, Inc., enrir\cs the holder to copies of the five major student pnblicarions. The Collegian, published four times each week; js the official news publication. A handbook and :1 directOry, :1p1 caring soon after the fall semester opens, contain general information about the college and an address list of faculty and students. The college annual, the Campus, appears dming tbe final month of the college yem·. (To obt•nin a co1w of the Campus, a J:eserv:uion fee must be paid at the opening of the fnll semester and membership in the association must be held both semesters or one semester plus a charge of $2.50.) The college literarr magazine, Backwash, is published once each semester at a nominal charge. All student publications distributed on campus are under the general control of an eight-member board of publications composed eq ually of faculty and students; STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS Student organizations are encouraged, and over 100 of them representing various fields of social, academic, vocational, and professional interests have been granted recognition. Nine national social fraternities and six national social sororities exist on the campus and operate group-living units. Religious interests are served by the college religious centers adjacent ro rhe campus. Tht.:Sc many and varied types of organizations not only offer nn opporruni r;y for social life but also make a fine contribution to the development of smdcnt leadership. Associated Women Students All women students are automadcally members of the Associated Women Students. This organization coordinates the activities of various women's organizations on the campus and sets standards of conduct and of group living for women students. Honor Societies In addition to high standards of scholarship expected of all students, special recognition is giv!!n to superior scholarship. The honor sodety of Phi Kappa Phi, a national scholarslup organization, was cst:~blished at Fresno State College in 1953. Most depanmems of the college sponsor honor societies, many of them national in scope. in which membership is based upon superior college WOl-k. The Blue Key National Honor Fr:lteruity for men and the oltalon Honor Society for women offer membership to students who havt: gooil scholarship, are prominent in college activities, and who have demonstrated leadership in student affairs. ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The Fresno State College Alumni Association, with headquarters in the social science building, has a long record of cxtensi c ~nd V:Hjcd activities. T he as:;ocintion, incorporated in 1940, has established a sound financial policy. It pmvides :mqual scholarships and loans and has a program of athletic, social, and service activities. The Bulldogger, the official alumni magazine, is published four times a year. Annual dues are $5 a single membership; $6 joint annual membershlp for married couples who are alumni; and life membership is $50, which includes husband and wife. Anyone who hns attended Fresno State College for one semester or more is eligible for membership. Each member shall direct twenty percent of his dues upon payment to a scholarship of llis choice listed on the Alumni Scholarship Program.
