MUSIC Above: Wahlberg, Forsblad, Berdahl Acting as host to 3,000 music students from California, Nevada, and Arizona at the regional conference of the National Music Festival, the Fresno State music department topped off a year of colorful activities that won honors and rated enough newspaper publicity space to put the glow back into "Chan's" cheeks. Headliners in the music department were the band, selected from the musical and marching myriads at the Shrine East-West game as the honor band; the symphony orchestra which presented a six-concert series along with the brilliant WPA symphony; the new men's chorus and the Dream Girls, Spring Swing stars; champion baton-twirlers Barbara Hessick and Wynton Cochran, who paced the band in its spirit-sparking at the stadium; and the massed choruses who presented the perennial Fresno Christmas favorite, Handel's "Messiah," to capacity crowds that overflowed into classrooms to hear via loudspeakers. Instructors in the department, the cultural contact between the college and the community and valley, are Arthur G. Wahlberg, Dr. Arthur C. Berdahl, Arthur Forsblad, Miriam Fox Withrow, Lyllis D. Lundkvist, Verne Delaney, Arthur Bryon, Helen Kazato, and Harry Noren. 104
