On the international scene, the past year was noted for the pursuance of policies of personal diplomacy. Nikita visited Ike. Ike visited everyone else and then got around to seeing Nikita. Fresno State College had a part in one of the many cultural exchanges between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Late in February and early in March, the campus was toured by five of the Soviet Union's more noted authors. The five—Stepan Shchipachev, Mukhtar Auezov, Aleksandr Gonchar, Leonid Leonov and Sofya Krugerskaya—got their only look at U.S. collegiate life while on FSC's campus and apparently they liked what they saw. For they wrote Dr. Joyal and said, "Our visit in Fresno was easily the most successful of our Western swing." The five toured campus facilities, had a look at local elementary and high schools and conducted a literature workshop on campus.
