THE FRESNO STATE COLLEGE ORCHESTRA, row one (I to r)—Stan Griffin, first violin; Louise Russell, first violin; Gordon Shacklett, cello; Jean Olsen, viola; Nathan Workmon, viola; Jeannette Wedel, second violin; Joanne Pyott, second violin. Row five—Haig Balakian, percussion; Norman Moglia, tympani; Mr. Russell Howland, conductor. 0rcke4tra The Fresno State College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Russell Howland, made several appearances during the year. Among the group's appearances were the winter concert, the annual Messiah presentation, and the January music reading clinic. Forty musicians composed the symphony orchestra membership this year. Ten of these also played for the Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra. WOODWIND SECTION of the Orchestra rehearsing. 0, pera The Experimental Opera Workshop was started in the fall semester for the first time at FSC. Seven voice music majors met three times weekly to study one-act operas to give the singers a broad experience in doing operatic parts. The vocalists, under the direction of Professor Verne Delaney, presented two light operas, "The Telephone" and "Gallantry" in their debut and plan to present more. One of these will be a 30 minute live-television program. The light opera, GALLANTRY in which Dr. Gregg (Tod Fortner) tries to stab Donald (Don Paris), Lola's (Elizabeth Martinez) patient because he wants Lola for himself. 53
